the beautiful actress and fashion icon anna may wong was the first american chines movie star and the first asian american to become an international star. she was born in los angeles 1905 and got her first role in a movie 1919 and by 1924 she had achieved international stardom. in the 1930´s she traveled a lot between Europe and los angeles for film and stage work.
because of her race she could never get the leading role in movies. it was against law for asian woman sharing an on-screen kiss with any person of another race, even if the character was asian.
in 1934, the mayfair mannequin society of new york voted her "the world's best-dressed woman", and in 1938 look magazine named her "the world's most beautiful chinese girl"
anna may wong died from a heart attack in 1961, 56 years old. her long and varied career spanned both silent and sound film, television, stage, and radio. she was in more then 50 films.
