man ray was an american artist best known for his  avant-garde photographs.  he worked most of his life in paris where he had his studio.  he was a leader of american modernism and he contributed to both dada and surrealist movements.
in his studio in parisman ray created a new type of photography without using camera. he created photos by using light-sensitive paper, objects and a light source  which he called "rayographs".

"I photograph the things that I do not wish to paint, the things which already have an existence. "

man ray was also a painter, filmmaker, sculptor and philosopher
 he was forced to move back to america do to the world war II.  in america he was almost only known for his photographs but he wanted to be known for his painting.  so later  he concentrated mostly on  his painting
 "I paint what cannot be photographed, that which comes from the imagination or from dreams, or from an unconscious drive. "

in 1999 he was named one of 25 most influential artist in the 20th century by art magazine
